As the fall season fast approaches, take the time now to set your oral health care routines in place. One common condition that often goes untreated within a person’s mouth is due to gum disease. An early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis.
Gingivitis is caused by a deterioration in tissue. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress into advanced stages of gum disease which can lead to tooth loss. Fortunately, prevention plans can be put into place to prevent gum disease from arising. Not only should you improve your oral health care by brushing and flossing daily and visiting your dentist for frequent checkups and bi-annual professional cleanings, you should also improve your lifestyle. This includes removing any unhealthy habits that can damage your teeth and gums, including chewing or smoking tobacco.
If you have neglected your oral health care, and think you may have signs of gingivitis, inspect your mouth regularly. Look for signs of excessive redness, swelling, tenderness to your gums, frequent bleeding, bad breath, and receding gums. If you notice any of these signs, visit your dentist for a complete oral exam.
