Teeth Whitening Considerations

Are your teeth stained or yellowed? Do you yearn for pearly whites that are…pearly white? Teeth whitening in Westminster and Columbia, Maryland, may be the solution you have been looking for. However, there are some circumstances in which teeth whitening is not recommended or will not have optimal results. Please talk to our dentist before making the decision to whiten your teeth. Factors including the following will be considered:

Age & Pregnancy
Those under the age of 16 should not whiten their teeth because the pulp chamber is enlarged until this age. If a youth’s teeth are whitened, the pulp may become irritated or sensitive. We recommend that pregnant women do not whiten their teeth.

Sensitive Teeth & Allergies
Talk to our dentist before whitening your teeth if you have sensitive teeth and gums. Receding gums and defective dental restorations can also be an issue. If you are allergic to peroxide, which is a whitening agent, do not use a whitening product.

Gum Disease, Cavities, & Other Dental Issues
If you have gum disease or if your teeth have worn enamel, our dentist may discourage you from whitening your teeth. Before you bleach your teeth, any cavities need to be treated to avoid sensitivity. If you have exposed tooth roots, they will not become brighter, as they do not have an enamel layer.

Dental Restorations
Dental restorations like fillings, crowns, veneers, and bridges will not whiten. Because of this, whitening a smile with restorations will result in an uneven look. The teeth without restorations will appear lighter than those with restorations.

Unrealistic Expectations
If you expect your teeth become blinding white, you may be disappointed. A healthy shade to strive for is one that is slightly whiter than the whites of your eyes. Smokers should be aware that their results will be marred if they continue smoking, particularly if they smoke during the bleaching process.
